  • Bring your tithes and offerings as an act of worship and in response to God’s grace.
  • Refresh yourself in the __ of God.
  • Read through biblical calls for worship.
  • __ for and find ways to encourage those around you.
  • Remember that worship is for Him and not about us.

Undivided: Straying from Truth

James 5:19-20

Big Truth:

It’s more loving to confront __ than to watch __.

What can this passage teach us about straying from the truth?

• __ is real.

• Deception brings __.

• __ is loving.

• Grace is __.

Reflection: Warren Wiersbe offered this list of questions to help people examine their lives in light of the teachings of the book of James. The questions help a person see if they are maturing in the faith.

  1. Am I becoming more and more patient in the tests of life?
  2. Do I play with temptation or resist it from the start?
  3. Do I find joy in obeying the Word of God, or do I merely study it and learn it?
  4. Are there any prejudices that shackle me?
  5. Am I able to control my tongue?
  6. Am I a peacemaker rather than a troublemaker? Do people come to me for spiritual wisdom?
  7. Am I a friend of God or a friend of the world?
  8. Do I make plans without considering the will of God?
  9. Am I selfish when it comes to money? Am I unfaithful in the paying of my bills?
  10. Do I naturally depend on prayer when I find myself in some kind of trouble?
  11. Am I the kind of person others seek for prayer support?
  12. What is my attitude toward the wandering brother? Do I criticize and gossip, or do I seek to restore him in love?

Undivided: Effective Prayer (Part 2)

James 5:13-18

All prayer is not equal prayer. All prayer is not equally effective.

Big Truth:

When a child of God pursues the will of God (in faith, persistence,

and righteousness), there is greater effectiveness in prayer.

Ask questions like…

  • Am I a child of God?
  • Am I pursuing the will of God?
  • Am I walking by faith?
  • Am I persistent in prayer?
  • Am I living righteously?

What can we learn about praying effectively in difficult contexts?

  • Believers must pray when they encounter suffering. (v.13)

Praying while suffering may accomplish one of two things.

It can provide relief by removing the affliction (if it’s God’s will).

It can provide grace for enduring the affliction (while accomplishing God’s will).

  • Elders may be called to pray over the sick. (v.14-15)
  • The __ is to pray for each other through sin. (v.16)

__ living hinders our prayers.

When confessing sin, there needs to be __ honesty that sin was committed, but not a public __ of every detail of the act. (Psalm 51)

  • Believers should pray __ when serving the Lord. (v.16b-18)

Elijah’s prayers were NOT powerful and effective because He was a spiritual superhero; they were powerful and effective because he was a __ man who prayed __.
