Pursuing God: Seek Him Through Scripture

Psalm 119:1-2

There are 4 primary ways that God has revealed Himself to humanity: __, conscience, __, and the canon of Scripture.

The words used for Scripture and the number of times they’re used in Psalm 119:

  1. “Law” (tôrāh) occurs 25 times.
  2. “Word” (dāḇār) occurs 24 times.
  3. “Laws” (mišpāṭîm) occurs 23 times.
  4. “Statute(s)” (ʿēḏûṯ/ʿēḏôṯ) occurs 23 times.
  5. “Command(s)” (miṣwāh/miṣwôṯ) occurs 22 times.
  6. “Decrees” (ḥuqqîm) occurs 21 times.
  7. “Precepts” (piqqûḏîm) occurs 21 times.
  8. “Word” or “promise” (ʾimrāh) occurs 19 times.

Principle 1: __ to God’s Word is a major part of devotion to God.

Happiness comes to those…

  1. Whose way is __
  2. Who walk in the law of the Lord
  3. Who __ His testimonies
  4. Who seek Him with all their heart

Principle 2: There is a vital __ between living God’s Word and the spiritual __ of God’s people.

Principle 3: We cannot __ God from His Word. The way we __ God’s Word is the way we treat God.

Principle 4: __ God is about more than reading or studying the Bible.

Principle 5: When God’s people seek Him through His Word (being willing to __ and __), it will change every part of life.

When we’re devoted to trusting and obeying God, His Word…

  • Keeps us clean (v. 9)
  • Gives us joy (v. 14)
  • Guides us (v. 24)
  • Establishes our values (v. 37)
  • Helps us pray effectively (v. 58)
  • Gives us hope (v. 49)
  • Brings us peace (v. 165)
  • Shows us freedom (v. 45)
  • Brings companionship (vv. 63, 74, 79)
  • Helps us find and fulfill God’s purposes (v. 73)
  • Strengthens us to witness (vv. 41–43)
  • Adds stability to life (Psalm 119)
  • Etc.

Response/Reflection:

  • Based on the message you heard, what is God prompting you to do?
  • Based on your treatment of Scripture, what does that say about your treatment of God?
  • What are three changes you can make that would help you pursue God more diligently through Scripture?

In Christ: God’s Design for Marriage (Part 2)

Ephesians 5:22-33

God’s design for marriage can be expressed in three words: leave, cleave, and weave.

  • Leave father and mother
  • Cleave to your spouse and
  • Weave together so that the two become one

In God’s design for marriage, He established the husband as the __ of the home, and the wife as the __ of the husband. Wives are called to submit to their husbands as to the Lord (v.22). Husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loved the church (v.25).

How we __ to others should reflect how __ relates to us.

Christian marriage is a __ of Christ and His Church.

Intimacy grows in __, but it is stifled in __.

Conclusion/Reflection:

  • Have your dreams, desires, and plans become a list of expectations for your spouse? Submit the list to God and release your spouse to enjoy unconditional love.
  • If marriage is a microcosm of Christ and His Church, what is getting in the way of the world seeing Christ in your marriage? Are their habits, attitudes, expectations, a critical spirit, or anything else that’s blurring people’s ability to see Jesus?
